I've got to lose some weight

Friday, 6 November 2009

While I don't quite look like this guy, I'm no Greek Adonis either.

I could easily stand to lose 10kg.

Why am I like this? Honestly, I love my DrPepper, McDonalds and Gusto drink bar. Too much fat, oil & sugar!

The biggest culprit is McDonalds. I often go to McDonalds before I go to my university classes as it is the only place I can be sure to get a seat, be able to understand the menu and get to my classes on time.

This should no longer be an excuse for me.

From now on I will try to improve my Kanji reading ability and I will take additional interest in preparing sandwiches for myself when I do not have access to a microwave. I think I should also buy a set of scales, just to track my actual results.

Maybe a little exercise wouldn't hurt, just a little.

What do you think? Any advice?

Walking is good. I like to take long walks during my lunch break at work. And I always take the stairs. Lots of little things add up.

You looked fine.

Don't tell me you've gained weight in a year? :D

@Tornadoes
@Today I went hiking up a mountain with my eldest son, that was quite good exercise. Slept for three hours once we got home.

@Lina
Even then I felt I could lose a few, and I guess I could lose a few more.

Having realized, a few months back, that the "little bit extra" was building up to be a "lot", I started taking a look at this whole diet / exercise thing and basically what it boils down to is: a) consuming fewer calories than you expend is the best way of losing weight; b) exercise does not really help with weight loss directly, although it does have other general health benefits of course. Once I was aware of that, losing weight was fairly simple, if a somewhat gradual process. (I am in a bit of a relapse right now, mainly due to work stress and also the need to build up reserves for the long Antarctic winter, but know how to get back into better habits).

don't people in japan exercise? when my parents were still together my dad and my brother daniel would go out cycling every weekend without fail, then o saturday nights he would take us bowling/ ice skating / swimming, i also did horse ridding on weekdays, daniel did kick boxxing, and dad would go to the gym. mayb he just wanted very healthy children... i thought it was normal. but since my parents split up and i havent exercised much. i dont like not exercising because i feel like im asleep all the time, i also like dr pepper and maccies but i can tell im putting on wieght.
and he always made me and daniel eat a bowl of fruit after school and made smoothies/juicies/milkshakes at the weekend.

living healthy feels better, you have loads of energy and feel more awake, although i don't think you looked over wieght in your blog pic, still eating more fruit and doing exercise on a regular basis keeps you healthy. if you want to loose wieght then you have to exercise alot and cut out all fatty foods.

How I lost my fast food habit overnight...
I read a book called "Fast Food Nation" by Eric Schlosser.
I've since lost 5 kgs and my BMI is back to normal. I get straight "A"s in my annual health check up here now. Also, by supporting a huge foreign multi national like this, you're helping to kill the local tradional Japanese restaurant scene. My local sushi place here closed a few months ago :(

I agree with Tornadoes28, walking is good specially in the morning. Also, a big factor is the food you eat, you should watch what you eat.

@Penguin
The same with me. Just minor changes over a longer period are more effective.

@Em
People do exercise, I just haven't been.

@Plugger
What if I only eat sushi at chain sushi restaurants like kappa???

@Sugar Daddy
I have been watching what I eat, as I bring it up to my mouth. Now I should be more careful....

Stop your "what ifs..." and do something! You are still young and there is time for you yet!

Going to somewhere like Kappa is fine - in moderation. Not having been to a kappa recently I can't make a knowledgable comment. Just remember that rice is very high in carbohydrates. If your local sushi shop can do sashimi instead of suhsi I would go for it. If you can get sashimi at your local Kappa, then try it! Letting your kids see your new healthy eating habits will influence them for life. They are so impressionable now that what you do with them now will remain with them forever. If they feel that a shop that has big red and yellow clown as their spokesperson, is their role model for a healthy life, it will be hard to get them to think otherwise when they are older. Hamburger style chains are very good at getting people addicted to sugar and salt. The body naturally craves for this and these chains deliberately saturate their so called fioods with it. These chains then complete the addiction cycle by providing significant quantities of caffeine in soft drinks. Colas are the prime example. Once they have young children as users, they can be relatively confident that they have a lifetime customer. The consequences can easily be seen on the streets of any major western city.

After rambling on aimlessly like that I just have to say again, don't let your life be a "what if". Get out there and do it. Don't believe me, read up on it yourself. My local library here in west Tokyo has "Fast Food Nation" in English. Yours in Saitama probably does as well. if not, as them to get it.
Good luck & good health.

You haven't said anything I don't "know" but there's a difference between what I "know" and what I "feel".

And I feel like stuffing my face with a Big Mac. Though I feel hollow afterwards as eating at McDonalds too often takes away the magic.

Anyhow, I'm not worried about carbs. It's processed carbs one should be concerned about.
