Cigarette Smoke

>> Friday, 30 October 2009

Yesterday I went back to Gusto for lunch with my son. He wanted another toy from the Gatcha-Gatcha, I wanted another King Burger.

Yum!

When we got home at 12:40 there was time to wash our hands, brush our teeth, give the baby a kiss (from both of us) and go have an afternoon nap. And it was in bed when I noticed the stench of cigarette smoke on both of us.

Yuck!

That seems to be life in Japan, even though you sit in the non-smoking section you can't avoid getting the stuff on you (and in your lungs). Every time I go to a family restaurant or internet cafe, I always sit in the non-smoking section and come out stinking of the stuff.

Have you noticed this?

That's too bad.

The choice between secondary smoke or a meal out...

Well, you won't have to live there forever.

I *used* to occasionally notice this problem in Ohio (on the rare occasion that I went to a restaurant, a couple of times a year typically, and then only if the restaurant *had* a smoking section, which a lot of them didn't), but a couple of years ago we finally passed a state law making it illegal to subject people to tobacco smoke in public places or places of employment. I guess we had a sudden outbreak of common sense. Smoking is still legal, but you have to do it in private, e.g. at home, where you only harm yourself and your family.

Perhaps some day Japan will see the light and do something similar.

Meanwhile, no matter where you live, food that you cook at home is always better than restaurant food anyway, so if the restaurants are smokey, you can just not go there. Be glad your workplace isn't a smoking environment; I've read that some people living in Japan have been stuck putting up with smoke-filled air pretty much all day every day. I don't know about you, but I wouldn't be able to put up with that. I'd go postal.

It's not fun but mostly I just avoid places that are smoky or change my clothes frequently.

I would like things to be better, but I have too many day dreams about watching smokers having to breathe through a hole in their neck. That always puts me in a good mood.
