Internet Costs

Apart from fantastic trains, low taxation, low home loan interest rates, cheap restaurants and safety, there is another reason why I love living in Japan

Cheap Internet.

I decided, just for a chuckle, to see what plans were available at my old ISP Netspace. $50 for a 24M Adsl2 connection that requires I bundle my phone line? Wow! With a generous 40Gig data limit!

I currently pay ¥3500 for a 100M Fibre Optic connection that has no data limit. On a good evening I can get about 15Gig downloaded.

There is just no comparison.

Life in Japan is great.

yes, the internet here is very good. I couldn't get the 100mbps, but I did have a 47mbps option and yes, 10+ gigabytes a night is easy..

47M still isn't bad, I only get a difference when I am downloading off local sites.

I miss internet in Japan!! I used to have fibre optic at 100mbps and downloading was easy!

Now I am back in Brisbane til June and the internet is really slow, and my partner, who didn`t know that there was a download cut-off downloaded and ran up a 15000 dollar bill (AUS DOLLARS) over month because he somehow managed to bring a virus with him from Japan! Luckily, because we could prove the virus was there they let us pass on the bill. Thank god.

Apparently Australia's problem is that it is a large country with a relatively small, English-speaking population down on the other side of the planet, which means relatively high infrastructure costs compared to many other countries, hence the comparatively expensive / limited internet connectivity options.

@Lulu
Then come back?
Those upload charges can be a real killer if you don't read the fine print.

@Penguin
Thus why I voted with my feet.
