Studying; Masu Mashita

Well another Japanese class is over for the night. I'm not feeling so bad about my ability after tonights lesson. There's another girl who speaks Japanese quite a bit better than me, but she can't write anything. For me Hiragana and Katakana are OK but Kanji is still beyond me.

At first we all practiced some Kanji, reading & putting two together to give new meanings. That mostly left me gaping my mouth a bit like a goldfish. However when the beginners were separated out, I was able to do much better.

Here's a scan of the main worksheet for tonight.

Yeah, pretty bad, I know. But I still got everything correct and finished writing quickly.

Well, I'll keep doing my best! Yosh!

Keep it up!! There's no shame in starting out at the bottom - everyone who studies another language starts out the same.

Be glad your teachers don't use romaji. That writing system is horrible and an abomination to the Japanese writing system. Once you get the ひらがな and カタカナ down, you'll absolutely love 漢字 since reading stuff written without it will make you hate reading Japanese. For example, looking up just かんじ without using any kanji will net you a lot more than one search result.

頑張って!!

I studied Japanese in college, and I am in the same boat as you about kanji. After 4 years, I pretty much had hiragana and katakana down, but kanji was (and still is) my nemesis. I didn't study like I should have, but I know it's difficult even with diligent studying. I'd love to visit Japan someday (hopefully soon!) but I have a fear of being completely overwhelmed in terms of language barriers ;)
Thanks for the blog! Good luck with your studies :)

Thanks. It's all still giving me a headache. But it's something to keep me off the streets.... :-)
