Fingerprinting in Japan, A Blogs Eye View

Not so welcome to Japan any longer, that's how we begin things with this evenings post. There has been much interest in this issue, with protests outside the Justice Ministry and an online petition against fingerprinting. This is one serious topic.

So I thought I'd shed a little light on the views of my fellow bloggers. I'd like to thank them for their contribution to this article.

My Life As A Gaijin wrote Fingerprints; She is questioning the nature of the fingerprinting and their validity.

Tokyo Tom wrote The Fingerprinting Issue; He relates the issue to that of general discrimination against foreigners.

Tokyo Expat Life wrote An Unwelcoming Japan; He mentions that this leaves a bitter taste in his mouth and relates it to the "new world order".

Jamaipanese wrote Fingerprinting Has Begun and Japan to Photograph; He has been blogging about the issue before I was, and has some serious points to raise. She questions the expectation that a known terrorist will really be caught through this system, or is it just discrimination.

Jasons Random Thoughts wrote Is Japan Unfriendly To Visitors?; He seems to be much more forgiving about this issue, but he does question about abuses of the system and difficulties had until the bugs are worked out.

Pink Tentacle wrote NEC helps Bigbrother; The beginning "YOU WILL BE TREATED AS A POTENTIAL TERRORIST WHEN YOU ARRIVE" says enough for me.

Badaunt wrote Silly Silly Silly; A very detailed post about the many cons of this situation. How it will affect her and others she knows.

And of course there is the Re-Entry Japan blog. By the people who are organizing the petition.

I'd like to thank all of my fellow bloggers who have written articles about this issue. I'd like to invite my readers to check out each of these Japan related blogs and what they have to say about the fingerprinting issue.

Please don't forget to leave comments, participate in discussions, forward links to your friends or bookmark the pages on Digg, Stumble or Technocrati. Lets get the word out about this discrimination.

Woops! I fixed it!
But hey, I won't make the same mistake again.

I can't wait to see if they tell us why the 5 people were denied entry after being fingerprinted.

I wrote something about it, today.

(Since you asked!)

Thanks for putting this together. It's been great to read other people's opinions and I've learnt a lot more about Japan's policing system. I have to admit, the more I read, the less I'm happy about it.

I'm a Permanent Resident of Japan, from the UK and have lived here since 1994. Japan has never been attacked by foreign terrorists and if such attack is likely it will happen overseas. Japan has been attacked by home grown terrorists. The introduction of fingerprinting is against the Japanese Constitution which affords protection to all peoples who are in Japan and not just Japanese nationals.

Protection against what?
Terrorists? Don't make me laugh. Any terrorist operatives will be cleanskins who do not have fingerprint records and will enter any country legally to commit one off terrorist acts.

Previous visa over stayers? Most likely.
People who have a Japanese criminal record? Certainly

But don't make me laugh with the "protection from terrorists" joke any more. It's too funny and my ribs hurt.
